Journey

This post has been published by me as a part of the Blog-a-Ton 19; the nineteenth edition of the online marathon of Bloggers; where we decide and we write. To be part of the next edition, visit and start following Blog-a-Ton.

If it was up to me, I would be climbing trees just for the heck of it …

But then Mama said, “We will buy you some pretty frocks for your birthday this week "

Frocks never made it easy to climb those trees.

If it was up to me, I would come home with muddy feet…

But then Mama said “You ought to be playing at home. Give up your tom boyish ways."

If it was up to me, I would be whistling away melodies.

But then Mama said, "Young girls ought to have a shy demeanor. How can you be so un fille?"

If it was up to me, I would be playing cricket in the gully…

But then Mama said,” Pretty girls ought to have a fair complexion. You ain't going to play with those boys no more".

If it was up to me, I would never be cooking …

But then Mama said "It helps to start early. Good wives make perfect Rotis"

If it was up to me, I would never give up so much..

But then Mamma said "You are turning into a fine young Woman, Simi!"

If it was up to me I would never be on this Journey…

  2. Yes we may like to believe that we are slowing becoming a modern society but if you look closely , we have a long way to go ..

  5. So True. Even with all our Modern habits, lifestyles, poses, styles.....somewhere inside we do occasionally display signs of the Gender Discrimination that our society has hammered into our minds.

  6. Come on, I bet Mommy would be proud if you contradicted her to fulfill some of your wishes, only to show her the true standing of women.

Yes, this is a male dominated society but unless we raise our voices against it, nothing can change.
Plus, lets not forget this society itself has been made to believe that it is gender biased, because a bunch of people raised their voices to support so!

The post was really touching, though and stirred the rebel in me!

  7. Since the society is quite parochial, it takes a great deal of effort on the part of a lady to show that she's at par with the men or even better. The childhood of a girl trying to meld into a society that is mostly boys is very well shown.

    All the best for BAT.

  8. Thanks a lot everyone..This is my first BAT..your comments are encouraging..

@Enchanta The rebel in me relates more to you than Simi :) You are right we have to fight but this piece is about people who are not strong enough to do that or are conditioned to believe that they do not have a choice ..Glad you liked it :)

  9. this is a journey that a lot of women go through I think.. following their own thoughts isn't an option. a little sad, but rebellion isn't part of the Indian society; not then, and not a lot even nowadays?

btw, please change your timestamp to April 3. BAT votes for your post will not count otherwise.

  11. It's a big challenge that we have to face in this world today, to go against all odds, to be what we always want to be. It's tough. I find your post brilliant and yes, I liked it. Keep writing.
